so if the actual data never changed format, which it sounds like is the case, then this might help. I don't think it could hurt - the only thing you could mess up if you erased the MBR would be a boot loader or something, like if he had multiple OSes, right? and if it's a storage drive, that shouldn't be the case.

i'd say rewriting the MBR sounds like the best bet, then. ( but hell I'm mostly guessing )
