so if the actual data never changed format, which it sounds like is the case, then this might help. I don't think it could hurt - the only thing you could mess up if you erased the MBR would be a boot loader or something, like if he had multiple OSes, right? and if it's a storage drive, that shouldn't be the case.

i'd say rewriting the MBR sounds like the best bet, then. ( but hell I'm mostly guessing )

essentially you are going to "split" the drive in half and format it as NTFS then you will copy your files to the newly created NTFS partition and store them somewhere (on the primary hard drive or on cds / dvds, wherever you have room) so you can reformat the drive back to its original size. After that you should be able to copy all of your files back to the drive with no problems.

This seems to be a pretty common problem with dual hard drive computers, once a "master" is formatted and partitioned the "slave" tends to be recognized as a RAW format since it is no longer in the BIOS, windows gets confused basically and doesn't know whats going on with the extra drive.

Hope this helps.

Greg

Ok I understand what your saying, but If I cant access the RAW formatted drive, now can I copy the files? The drive is a 60gig maxtor diamond plus drive. my C drive is a 80gig maxtor diamond plus. They are both about 4 years old. I think only about 15gigs or so were used on the slave drive.
thanks for your help guys!

The Partition Magic program should let you copy the files you want to the other partition. Try doing what the others have said about the MBR first as that would be much simpler and quicker. However if it doesn't work this other method has been known clear up the problem. Good luck!

Screw partition magic.

The MBR contains information about the drive and the partitions on it. It sounds like that got corrupted somehow. Is the data on the drive important? Do you know if it was dynamic, extended, primary partition?

Ok guys, I tried the fixmbr thing in the recovery console.. and it didn't do anything. The drive still says its corrupt and in RAW format. Any other suggestions?? Also, windows is not loaded on this drive, its just my slave storage drive.

Did you have it set to dynamic disk (they suck)

If you re-did the MBR, you should at least see something.

I would say send it to me and have me fix it, you pay shipping both ways. No promises though. And, if they are MP3's, I reserve the right to copy them

FYI, data storage is my profession and I am paid very well. Ask Shaggy and Koko.

I dont think there was an option to do dynamic disc. It just said are you sure you want to write a new MBR? There are a couple thousand songs on there yes... Where are you located? I would much rather try to tackle this issue myself if at all possible. does anybody else have any ideas?
Is there any way I can tell if it is for sure the MBR? when I try to access the drive it says raw format and basicly says the drive is blank. is this because the MBR is screwed up? or is it something more serious?

I'm in Dallas. It costs about $5 to ship a hard drive, just make sure there is nice soft foam all around it.

The MBR contains information about the drive. Kind of like a "table of contents". If that "table of contents" is messed up/corrupt, then the operating system (Windows) doesn't look past it, and refuses to recognize it as anything other than a new/corrupt disk ("Would you like to format this disk?")

So, my guess is the data is still on the drive, unless something actually wiped it out, or there is a hardware problem. You can see what is on it with the hex editor. Put it in read-only mode and you can see the filenames.

Normally, data recovery would cost a few thousand dollars. Much more if the hardware is faulty.

EDIT: Oh hey, I had an idea. Have you tried putting it on another IDE controller? Putting it on a USB controller? Reseat the IDE cable?
