I need a crash course in linux... anyone got any good websites? We're using telnet to access Kodiak... I honestly have no idea what i'm doing and i just started this class. We will be using emacs to write our own operating system... i have all the prerequisites for this class... but none of my previous classes gave me any linux/unix background... i guess i'm one of the few in the class that hasnt taught myself because it appears that everyone else knows what they're doing...

I took an Introductory Unix class last term. I was in the SAME boat as you. I thought it was introductory, i.e., no background needed whatsoever, which I certainly met. I get in the class, and we just start busting out code and all sorts of stuff and just about everybody but me knew exactly what was going on. Needless to say, it took alot of meeting with the instructor and f'ing up and learning from many, many mistakes to finally get it. By the time the class was over, I didn't want to go anywhere near emacs! I didn't mind the actually system and method of organization, I just wish the "introductory" course was a little more "introductory".
Good luck with it either way, I never really found too much out online, but I'm sure it's out there. I have a text leftover if you want it, but I didn't use it too much even though I had it. The instructor said it was too basic. Imagine that!

Start here. The grab a LiveCD distro of your choice. The easiest way to learn is to jump in and do it. Just think of it as the Windows Command shell on vitamins and steroids. And ugh... Emacs?? Tsk, Tsk. Writing your own OS, eh? Sounds like a rough class. Well, I'll ASSume you already know how to use a compiler (GCC ?). If not here's where to go. If you have questions, ask. I'd actually be willing to go out and buy a book if theres a good one out there... This semester is not turning out to be so great... I have the best class schedule i have ever had (no 8am classes!) but i'm taking this Computer Science 432 Intro to OS and it is probably going to be my hardest course here. I'm also taking a VB.NET & 4th Gen languages class... which i've had no prior expierience with VB either (at least that class is designed for people like me) but still learning VB, learning linux and on top of that building an OS??? im screwed. Thanks. i guess what i'm doing is jumping in and doing it... I guess i'm just not used to non graphical based OS's... what's wrong with Emacs? I know nothing about it except it's the method suggested by the professor...
thanks for the sites... i'll read up on them...

Emacs... The overly complicated 30MB text editor. Fun fun fun.

Ah ha! You've just unlocked the secret of the class; it's not writing an OS, it's writing ON and OS. =]

okay... so what should i use instead of emacs? We're using c++.
And in reality we're writing a simulated operating system. The professor has written a simulator that will act like the hardware for us to interact with.
