Wow...did this storm catch me off guard.

So I was down in NYC all weekend. Saturday it was like 60 degreess out. Walked around the city without a coat on and everything. It was great! Now, my drive back to this area is usually in the 3-3.5 hour range. So, I planned on leaving the city around 5AM to get me to work by 9AM. Plenty of time (so I thought).

I saw the 11PM news last night, and they mentioned a storm. I didn't think much of it because, A.) It was warm as hell on Saturday, B.) A little rain may slow things down a little, but as long as I can get north of Hartford by around 7:30, I should be fine. After all, its a reverse commute for nearly the entire ride! So I leave at around 5AM, and start out. The first thing I notice is that its a little colder than I anticipated, but still probably close to 40 or so. No big deal.

Entering CT there is a little white stuff on the ground, but the roads are still OK. No biggie. Then, around the Stratford area I've noticed a complete changeover to sleet. By the time I hit 91 (from the Merritt), it was snow. I hit a little backup approaching Hartford, but still close to my schedule. I'd say I was on 84 by 7:40, but by now the roads were getting nasty. 84 was where I really hit some trouble. You know how 84 has some good sized hills on it. Well, those hills were enough to stop the Semi's from getting to the top. We came to a complete stop on 84, at more than 1 hill. From there I knew I was done.

I just got into the office after my 6 hour ride from NYC. I sure saw my fair share of spinouts and accidents this morning. Luckily the SVT and the snow tires handled beatifully. Many times I was able to get in the barely used left lane, and maintain a manageable speed. You know, with a good set of tires on these cars, they do a damn good job. Now if I could have just gotten all those other cars out of my way.

Helluva way to start off the week.

Hey look, its almost lunch time

Got a question for all of you in eastern MA, as I have work tonight in Milford and am debating whether to cancel. How snowy/icy was 290 and 495(south)? Think it'll clear or improve by 3PM?

Having just traveled 290 and then 495 (North, not South), here is my report.

With snow tires (and I believe you have them), you should have ZERO problems. Even if you don't have snow tires, the middle lane was fine for nearly any vehicle.

There was enough of a path in the left lane for me to maintain about 45 mph safely. Just remember, use overpasses to switch between lanes. There's less of a snow rut. I imagine you'll be fine tonight too.

Sweet, good to hear. (I need the money!)

Now just to figure out when to study for that 8am quiz tomorrow, and how to tell my service fraternity rush manager that I can't attend half the events scheduled this week ... but that's wicked off topic

it would have been bad at all this morning if not for the people on the road that were afraid to drive in the snow

I came past one point on 91 where there was a SUV sitting in the middle lane and a state trooper right behind them, it cause a few mile back up and people were only doing 10 mph at best

I agree with Zack, I pull to the left lane all the time and with snow tires I cruise at 45 to 50 mph in the snow while everyone else is doing 30 in a lane that is almost clear, but I do admitt I have a hit a few spots that I should have lost control doing this, but the car holds on great.

I did hear about an hour after I got in at 8 the roads were pretty icy because of rain

i heard from someone here that a plow truck rolled on 93 somewhere today!

i saw tons of crashe and spinouts on teh roads before 7.

my bussy heath was involved in a 4 car accident on 89 in Bar NH.
a jeep spun out in front of him taking him out and then he got hit by 2 other cars.
luckily there wasnt much damae and he was able to drive to work.
the statie also said no one was at fault, which is good and bad, i guess.

I saw that this morning too.. A Mercedes SUV sitting right ing the middle lane 91 south around the Enfield town line. Must have been dead. I can't think of why they couldn't get it off to the side, but it sure was holding up traffic. Like 4 miles behind it.

It took me over an hour and half to travel from Enfield to West Hartford. Normally a 20 min ride. What a mess!
Hurry up Spring!!!
