I was thinking about upgrading the stock speakers in my 95 Contour (Premium Sound w/CD player and factory amp).

A sales person at a local car audio store advised that my system will sound worse by just upgrading the speakers because the factory amp does not put out enough power.
He further stated that the woofers on the factory speakers only move a short distance compared to aftermarket and a lot of bass and midrange will be lost if aftermarket speakers are installed.

B.S. or not?

That sounds Like BS to me, while you will not get the maximum benefit from aftermarket speakers if you stay with the stock HU and Amp (the amp is BS in my opinion), you will see limited benefit by going with aftermarket speakers with seperate drivers.

I would just buy new door speakers and a used alpine head unit with V drive on ebay for around 200 dollars. (cda 9833) Buy some components and it will sound great. It will sound like crap if you use a sub with the factory headunit. If you want a nice amount of bass go with a small rear deck mounted sub, or something like an Infinity bass link. Good luck

It's not complete BS. Using aftermarket speakers with a stock premium setup (with the amp) is only going to sound marginally better. Lower volumes, sure, but once you start opening up that volume you'll notice that they will distort just as bad as stocks. The amp is what is limiting everything. Either bypass it with an aftermarket h/u, or suffer. Just my 2 pennies.
