If you were a teenager and had a choice between driving a Corvette to school and driving a Honda Civic, what would you pick?

WOW great story. That is so cool to hear but bad news. I dont think the guy really deserves the car. Maybe thats why it was stolen from him in the first place.

The original 327-cubic-inch engine has been replaced by a 454 big block Chevy engine. The car has a stolen automatic transmission that wasn't introduced until the mid-1980s,...

Sounds like somebody dropped an old Pontiac combo under the hood...

Must be that jumbly-wumbly thing happening again.

That's great logic. Maybe you don't deserve yours. Someone should steal it.

They're probably talking about a 454/4L80E (or whatever the designation was) combo, basically what the old 454SS pickup had.

Too bad they didn't have that 4 speed in 1990. My brother has a 90 454SS with the no overdrive 3 speed auto. Holy crap it sucks on the highway, but I guess the good side is no waiting to downshift for passing at triple digit speeds!

It sounds just as bad as my old 84 Monte SS (also no o/d 3 speed, TH350) which had a 4.10 rear end... ohh boy 60mph was like 4000RPM (out of 4500/5000 or something).

That's nice. Substitute "TH700R4" in your next Google search and you'll get the equivalent. Might want to research the similarities between the two while you're at it. Sorry my immediate recall of GM's auto trans designations isn't as clear as it used to be. But the point remains the same (aside from the 700R4 designation being gone by the time the o/d version of the 454SS came out).

You confuzed me! The TH700R4 is a hydraulic light duty overdrive unit (like you will find in an 80s Camaro)... the 1990 454SS did not come with it. It came with the hydraulic TH400 3 speed, heavy duty, no overdrive unit.

In 1991 they swapped it out for the 4L80E, which is pretty much an electronic TH400 with overdrive.
