Higher RPM means the alternator brushes are probably floating and it sounds like early failure to me, too. The alternator probably won't show low voltage at idle. Try measuring the idle voltage. Does the battery light come on if you rev the engine briefly (parked) above 3000? If it does, measure the battery voltage then, too.
