The wheel is painted. The paint is essentually the same as the paint used to paint the car. Treat is as much like the finish on the body of the car as you can. Wash it frequently. Don't be afraid to wax it. Never use steel wool. Use strong cleaners as little as possible, preferrably never. Never use "Wheel Bright" (which is an acid). If you have a build up that doesn't want to come off easily, use a clay bar.

The strongest stuff I use (and not all that often) is a degreaser. Simple Green works well. I like "Big Orange" purchased from Smart & Final. Some degreasers can be too strong.

Always clean with lots of water. Have wheel cool and wet before using ANY cleaner. Rinse immediately.

Big Jim, those are some great tips for cleaning wheels. I just might print that for future reference.

I echo Jim's suggestions. You NEVER want to use anything acidic. I just don't understand people who use these harsh wheel cleaners that absolutely kill the finish on the wheel. It may look clean, but you may be wearing down the coating!

Most think that because a cleaner is "clear coat safe" it's fine. WRONG. Anodized wheels can be damaged by using a product for clear coated wheels!

Look for products that state "acid free" or "no acid".

As I've said over the past 6 years:
Treat your wheels like you treat your paint. You wouldn't spray Meguiar's Hot Rims on your paint would you?
