all things being equal, i'd rather give lowe's my business than HD. HD is much more convenient but the people in the paint dept were quite rude and moronic on multiple occasions, so as a matter of principle i'll use lowe's whenever possible. not that it matters to HD but it makes me feel better. besides, their husky line vs. lowe's kobalt vs. sears' craftsman = crapshoot as far as i can tell.

I bought a Kobalt and returned it after it's first use. It's obnoxiously loud. I had to put it outside while I was using it and it was still too loud. I am also looking for a somewhat quiet compressor.

I have a Craftsman 30Gal. air-compressor and it works great. It's loudness is the same as every other compressor I've heard before.

All comprssors are loud even the small ones, even the one i have , you can't even here the other person talk while it's running.

from what i can tell it's not the brand or size that makes the difference in sound - it's the type of motor (oil-less vs. oiled pump, belt-driven vs. direct-drive) that makes the difference. however, having only heard a few in person, i have no idea what the actual difference between one vs. the other would be. <shrug>

realizing i'm not going to find a truly "quiet" compressor - i'm just looking for a quietER compressor with good reliability/durability and good bang-for-the-buck.

seems like it's a six-in-one-hand/half-dozen-the-other type of choice between the major brands in my price range....just wondering if anyone had a preference for one vs. the other, or thoughts on size/HP-rating for common hobbyist use. not looking to over-buy for my needs but also not looking to buy something inadequate for what i want it to do....
