If you're living in a studio apartment, I'm going to go out on a limb and say you can't afford brands like Polk Audio, and many of the others listed. My suggestion is to go to check out the local pawn shops...seriously. Back when I was about fifteen I purchased my home audio system from Cash America Pawn. I got a very nice Marantz receiver, and a Sony Cd player for a total of $270. Both have worked flawlessly to this day. Speaker-wise, you can also check out pawn shops. Just stay clear of the notorious gigantor pawn shop speakers that are always on display. Just listen to a bunch in your price range and check the condition of each. Look at things like the rubber/foam surround, and if it has deteriorated at all. Make sure there is no contact btwn the coil and magnet when applying gentle pressure. Don't feel like you have to be an audio snob and get so and so brand. That's crap. And for the record Bose makes good speakers. Some feel it makes them elite or educated to put down name-brand companies whos products sell well.... like it's some conspiracy or something.

I think it is important to let us know what kind of budget you are looking at as far as a system. I can tell you that the best speakers that i have ever heard are the legacy whispers. However not many people including myself are going to drop 15K on a pair of speakers. So first figure out a budget you ae willing to spend. But in the mean time if you want recommendations, here you go.

Since it looks like you want a sub/sat system here are a few items in various price ranges.

500-$700 Sony Dream System Davfx80---- larger front speakers, can be wall mounted but also comes with stands, decent sounding system for the price, includes receiver w/built-it 5-disc cd/dvd changer. Good for small rooms for the average music/movie watcher.

$800 Energy Act6 speaker system---speakers & sub only---smooth sound and very acurate, not much bass output due to 8 inch sub, but very clean. Add receiver of your choice. With the right receiver, good for medium size rooms

$1500 Velodyne Deco System--speakers & sub only---Extremely efficient and accurate system. Not the smallest of satelite systems but all speakers are wall mountable. Don't let the size of the sub fool you. The 8 inch sub is powered by its own amp that puts out 600watts RMS and 1200 watts peak power output. This system is good for any size room, out put determined by how far you turn the knob
