hehe yeah, thanks for the advice, guys. I'm not a total newbie to audio stuff, so I know that there's much better stuff out there than what the marketing droids recommend. dnewma04 and dbzjr if i remember right helped me out a couple years ago with my car audio setup; It sounds great and not one "big name" speaker in the bunch. ( dayton titanic sub, peerless 6.5" and vifa tweets ) same deal with my grado headphones - no one's heard of them, but after 1 week with the sr60s I'll never use anything else ( except maybe a better grado ) so i guess what I'm looking for is maybe some more recommendations like that - stuff no one has heard of, but still sounds sick, so i can save a buck
now officially a troll, i guess. used to have a black 96 SE, until it broke down one too many times.
now I'm hunting for a motorycle.

I've recently owned some polks and klipsch models and in my opinion they didn't come close to the m&k's. Btw, good call on the bose. When I got tired of those little cubes, I blew them up for pure enjoyment.
i think his point is... don't say "buy polk, their stuff is great" when it all obviously isn't.
say "i bought this polk model abc and i loved it for these reasons".
it's akin to owning a vette and reccomending that everyone buy chevy since your vette is so sweet.
I should have clarified as M&K does have some lower end models as well and I haven't personally heard them. I have read some reviews on them and they were OK, nothing to brag about. Now the S, SS, MPS, and LCR series have had phenomenal reviews and I personally own some of the LCR series. I'm not sure what his budget is but the LCR's are not extremely expensive and in my opinion are certainly worth the money. I know that M&K's are only sold through authorized dealers or on ebay so many people are not familiar with them. If anyone else on here has heard them in person, please chime in as I'm curious to know what you thought.

looked at M&K's website for a little bit, and I thought the LCR series looked pretty expensive, actually. even the smallest one, the LCR 25, was $250 and that's only a 1" tweeter and a 3.25" speaker. maybe m&k is a little out of my league

Ahh, glad you mentioned the lcr-25. I forgot to mention that those are the new xenon series and I haven't heard them. They use a different tweeter than most of the LCR's "55, 650,750's etc." The other tweeter that you see on the 750's etc. are the ones that M&K uses in most of their setups and they sound truly amazing. You never posted your budget so I wasn't sure if these would be in your range or not but they can be had for a little less on ebay.

Exactly, everybody has opinions on here but to say "you have to go with brand x because thats what I have and they are awesome" is usually not the type of opinion somebody is looking for. Just think of how many people on here would have Audiobahn if those types of opinions were taken seriously.

I didn't say he had to buy what I recommended. I said he should check them out as they're highly respected in the audio community. People ask for opinions so others offer what they think. It's up to you to go audition them before purchasing.

First, Bose, in general doesn't make what I would consider even moderate quality speakers so rule them out completely. When you are asking for small, how small exactly are you seeking? Give me approximate dimensions. My first thought would be some pre-fabbed PE .25 cu ft enclosures with a FR125S from www.creativesound.ca in each. Small and very easy to make. Not sure how the budget works out.

I forgot to ask, are you looking for surround sound? If not, older silver faced receivers from the late 70s and early 80s make great investments in terms of quality and you won't lose a dime on them like buying today's electronics. My Toshiba SA-775, blows away my TOTL HK from a few years back in terms of build quality, power, and especially in AM/FM tuner performance. Although, it would never fit the bill for a "small" receiver at 22" wide and nearly 8" tall. It's not just receivers from that vintage either, there are some quality 2 channel alternatives floating around from Carver, Rotel, NAD, and a few others that won't break the bank on the used market. They are hard to find, the a/d/s/ Atalier series or the C2 series of components can be found cheaply and they combine good performance and sleek looks.

Have you ever compared their specs (if you can find them published) compared with other quality brands? You would be surprised who comes out on top. With Bose your paying that much extra just for the brand name.
