As stated... Excellent starter bike. And, as long as you don't travel interstates, it'll be plenty fast enough. They're super reliable and don't have a ton of plastic pieces that'll need replacing if/when it gets dropped. =]
Good choice.

You'll be paying out your ass for a 2006 bike. You're better off getting a 600R or a 636 that is a few years old and saving yourself a TON of money. Another good 600 to start on for you would be a Suzuki SV650. Easier to learn on and a little less twitchy as it's a more upright twin.

I'm with Stazi. 1 to 2 year old bikes are plentiful and much less than new ones. Although that 650r is a tempting bike, and no used ones to be had.

If someone could please make a list of bikes and years for me to look at it would be helpful... mind you my price range is under 5k, and I AM NOT LOOKING TO GO FAST, just something to go out with on nice days. Also something that isnt going to be killer on insurance would be nice too. Thanks, Bill

the SV650 shouldn't be too bad on insurance (aything with an R in the name of the bike is like a red flag to insurance, and rates go up)

Kawasaki Ninja 250/500
Suzuki GS500 or SV650 (naked is your best bet as a new rider)
Of course, there are the older 600s many recomend. At least go with a carb'd 600 as opposed to a newer, FI 600.

Agreed. As far as the '06 650r goes, I'd stay away. I'm not saying it's a bad bike or not right for you, just realize this. You WILL drop the bike. Everyone does, it's not a matter of if, it's when. If you're comfortable with allowing that to happen on a brand new 650R, and hoping that none of the plastics are affected, just the bracing and exposed engine parts (chain drive, exhaust, radiator, etc.), then go ahead and take it. But personally, I think it'd be a safer bet to just buy a nice used bike , around 600 cc's and first off take the MSF course. Then slowly start learning on your 600 until your comfortable then hit the road. Once you've felt that your confident and able enough to get a new bike (and deserve it, i.e., after your falls and "squid"ness is out of you) THEN go for a new bike. Good luck either way, though! Biking is a great hobby and incredibly rewarding. I'm currently on a '97 Yamaha FZR600R. Although most of my time with it is being spent working on it, it's still a blast! Let us know what you go with or if you need help finding a bike once u pick a model you like.

The 650r is also a twin. It is just a parallel twin instead of a V. Also, there is a naked version of this bike offered over seas that looks really good. I think that the faired one here is also one of the best looking Kaw bikes.

If you got the cash go new, warranty and you know nobody's used it before.
650R is kinda too Buellish for me, with the chopped tail and the underside exhaust.
I'm thinking of a FZ6/SV650 lately but I figure I can get those bikes when I'm an old geezer like most of you here.
