If you purchase reman drive axles, be sure you have new c-clips with them. Also, the reman drive axles that I have seen come with new nuts which are quite a bit thinner than the factory nuts. You will get better grip and less slipping when torquing to 200 ft lbs or so if you just purchase a pair of factory ford axle nuts.....

Where? every place i have been looking it's about 80.

If you are going to buy one, spend the $120 for the new GCK axle from Autozone. I'm using them now and I have nothing but good things to say about them. I've been using it for four months or so and they haven't broke from the torque of my engine yet.

Why pay $80 when you can have brand new for $120!!! Plus no core charge.

Also, you can repair axles if you pull the shaft like that. It is usually a c-clip retainer that keeps the shaft in the joint.
You can undo the old cv boot clamp and buy a new one to reclamp it on with. Actually, I've used steel wire back in my youth to reattach a boot that came loose without pulling an axle. You just keep twisting until its very tight, cut the ends and tap them over. I wouldn't do it now but... I was young and poor in those days.

Bottom line, these axles wear out anyway and even if they look good, they are probably causing driveline vibration anyway. Get the $120 unless you're as poor as I was in those days.

I ended up putting new grease in the boot and using a clamp kit.

the car is not worth the new parts at this point... i just want to keep it on the road for another summer or 2.

i have another related question though. i removed the inner drive axle portion from the tranny to reassemble it. now that it is back together, i am having a hard time getting it to go all the way into the tranny. any suggestions?

Remove rotate and reinsert. It should just slip in on the passenger side as there is no snap ring.

I had trouble also. I purchased a 3 lb. dead blow hammer. Make sure the splines are lined up correctly then give the end of the axle, with the nut threaded on slightly to give you a better target to hit, a good smack with the hammer. Worked great for me. I think a block of wood to hit with a mini sledge hammer would work as well.

ok, so no special tools or anything... just give it a whack to get it on past the snap ring?

Examine the snap ring to make sure its not nicked or bent if you didn't put on a new one.
lubricate it with atf or something as well as the area that rides the axle seal.
Use a small wire brush or even an old toothbrush with some oil to dlean out the splines if there is any sign of reddish oxidation or other crude.

Othewise, just get it started to where it is splined, keep it very straigh and grab the shaft and give a couple gentle taps forward to compress the c-clip and get it to slide in. Since you know the tripod joint slides it will bang into the back of the joint housing. It isn't the best way, but since you've already put the boot on then you will damage the boot with a hammer. If you tap it gently enough you won't damage the joint and it'll go in. If it doesn't, remove the boot clamp, tap in the inner joint until it slides in, then reclamp the boot down.

I just get the shaft to start entering the splines (you check by rotating the shaft to see if it is engaging the spines) then shove it hard to get it past the clip-ring.
