i was trying to pull the hub to get my crappy bearing replaced. when i went to seperate the drive axle from the hub the axle boot pulled right off the side of the tranny. (see pics) so how badly did i screw myself? can i salvage the axle? and how the heck am i going to seperate it from the hub now?

my drivers side axle was rusted solid with the hub. Broke two wheel pullers in the process trying to get it off. I ended up just replacing the hub all together as well as the axles.

You DO realise that you CAN'T just slide the hub of the driveshaft right? You need to PUSH the stub shaft out of it.
Yanking on it gets you to where you are now.
As for that shaft, unless you have a CV Boot Clamp tool I don't see you being able to reinstall the boot and clamp properly so remove it from the hub and the remaining inner CV from the inner shaft and trade it in at the local parts store for a reman'd unit. You need to give them your old shaft (both pieces) as a core exchange.
Oh and get a Ford Contour Repair Manual while you at it so you can READ how to properly disassemble your car rother than go around yanking on parts.

stazi, i'm way ahead of you on getting a shop manual, unfortunately i'm also WAY ahead of myself... it hasn't been delivered yet. i thought that i could get away with using just the knuckle/bearing "how to" from this forum. i apparently thought wrong.
so, what's my best bet for getting that inner CV outa there now? it was late and i didn't want to futz anymore after making such an immediately apparent blunder.
thanks for your collective help

Who would think you could pull an axle out by hand?

not by hand, by the method described here http://www.contour.org/ubbthreads/showflat.php?Cat=&Board=v6maint&Number=895425&page=0&view=collapsed&sb=5&o=7&fpart=1 which in hind sight, has about a 2% chance on working on a axle that's been in there for the past decade.
is deserved, but instead of bashing my lapse of common sense, let's try to keep the thread constructive...
so what about the inner CV, should i just do my best excaliber/sword in the stone impersonation?

Autozone actually comes to the rescue. They have that rental program that has the slide hammer and the axle puller.

to get the outer stub shaft out of the hub you have two options. Put the hub in a vice and use an air hammer to push the shaft out - NOT A SLEDGE, YOU WILL RUIN THE BEARINGS! Or the best method. Rent a driveshaft puller/pusher from Murray's/local auto parts store chain and push it out.
