...high miles MTX's that have run from day one on ATF
has been,in 9 out of 10 cases,that the shift forks are
very tight/stiff on the shift rods(Vs a new stoc
fork),this leads me to think that long term exposure
to ATF fluids causes the lead based shift fork
bearings to 'grow' and become tight on the shafts and
maybe 'shed' some of the lead during operation when
stiff.To take lead and copper out of the MTX is done
when I fit slick shift forks,the bearings are all
steel roller type....FWIW!!!

At 23 when I bought the car it was the first thing I did when I brought it home. I guess common sense is different from person to person.

I also noticed that thing about lead being used to check the gear mesh. Lead hasn't been used for that for at least a couple of decades. Titanium dioxide has been common for a long time. You can't even buy the lead compound for rolling a pattern on a diff anymore. Blackstone needs to revise their comments.

I do believe that Ford has no maintenance interval for changing the manual trans fluid in our cars. I still change it anyway because I want it to last a long time.

This is true. I have never found any Ford documentation on the subject, and I had a dealer service rep tell me it never needed changing.

Now, think about that. These are the same guys trying to sell me 3k interval motor oil service on a car with a factory-recommended 5k interval. These are not the guys trying to sell me the car. If they are turning down a service opportunity, I just don't get it.

I'm 39, and I think I've changed manual tranny fluid, oh, maybe twice before this (only once I can actually remember). Lots of people overservice their cars because their grandpa's 39 "deuce" needed clearances checked every 1500 miles, and by golly if it worked for him... Anyway, I followed the recommended intervals on my other cars and the trend was that the newer the car, the longer the interval.

On my old CRX, you were supposed to check valve clearances every 15k. I overlooked this service (accidentally) until 45k. Clearances were still tight, and that was on a car from 1989. Based on my experience (common sense?) it was not hard for me to believe that a newer car would have even longer service intervals.

Oh well. You're right sometimes, and you're wrong sometimes, and as I alluded to above, common sense is uncommon (and often conflicting).

i agree about the dealers trying to sell you on other parts, like when my mother contour was in for a P0420 CEL and the PCM reprogram they called up and said by milage that it needed an oil change, ps fluid change, accessory belt, and a few other things, best part of that was I had just changed the oil myself ...

but like you said, we ended up doing it ourselves but my father said he would have paid to have the trans fluid changed on our Windstar if the dealer offered as it was a mess he really didn't want to deal with

No kidding on the Windstar. I enjoy changing oil and all that, but some things life is just too short for.

I don't see why they can't put a drain plug in automatic transmission oil pans. It would be so much nicer if you could drain the oil out of it before you took the pan down to change the filter, instead of trying to undo all of those crazy bolts with out spilling it everywhere.

I am probably going to kill my Aerostar tranny, because I am putting off the mess.

FWIW my dealer's service people told me either 75k or 100k, I forget which, for tranny fluid changes.

Yeah, I was just following the service guide, but my shift forks were so toasted by 25K miles from being so stiff that my shift cable snapped. It never shifted easy after that until I tore it apart and found the problem. Ever since then it's been just like butter, especially on REDLINE! Shoulda gone with my gut and changed the trans fluid once a year.
I do now!


BTW So far, I'm loving this Torco RTF for shift feel.
