Um, NO......

The US automakers were making lots of money when they agreed to pay for all the benifits they PROMISED to the employee/retiree personel and THEY WERE STUPID for doing so, NOT THE UNIONS. They never thought that Japanise cars would hit it big but they have, they never thought AMERICAN's would ever Buy FORIEGN car like they do now. They just didn't care and now they are paying for it BIG TIME.

You're right, the companies did agree to it and therefore the Unions are not at fault for the situation existing in the first place. Every one of us here would try to get our employers to pay us three times what we really should be making if we thought we could get away with it.

However, the Unions can fix the problem. And they don't. Therefore they play a significant role in why the US auto industry continues to be in the shambles that it is in.

Just because you didn't cause the problem, doesn't mean you can just sit there and watch it play out when you can do something to fix it. It's easy to sit there and shrug your shoulders and go "Eh," when the shareholders are paying for it. But eventually they won't, and the employees are the next in line to get bent over.
