I have been sponsored, yes.
Most companies will ask 2 primary questions:
1. What have you accomplished in competitions (either show-n-shine type or audio type) in the past?
2. What do they get out of the deal?
They want to know your level of commitment to the competition format you want them to sponsor you in. They need to know they are not wasting product by just giving away a freebie. They don't know you from Adam and want to be sure you will be a good promoter of their product. They'll probably make you sign a contract of some sort where you will be required to do at least a minimum number of events (possibly of a certain scale or size depending on the situation) or else get charged for the product they provided. Some sponsors may even require placing their label/logo very prominently on your vehicle which could pose a problem if the vehicle is also your daily driver.
