Anyone know where I can find something like this? I tried searching google but to no avail. My boss is an idiot when it comes to taking off a day around a holiday. Aren't most places shut down the day after a holiday? i.e. a Monday after this Christmas?

Most places if the holiday falls on a Saturday you get that Friday off (or a "floater" you can use anyday) and if it's on a Sunday you get the following Monday off.
There is no hard-and-fast rule though that says that you are entitled to such a thing though, as, of course, a business doesn't have to get you any days off, let alone a day that's not even a holiday.
NOTE: The above is more of a salaried employee thing and doesn't apply nearly as often to a business that actually has to shut down. They often won't get the day after a weekend-holiday off. It kinda depends on what type of business it is.

Well, we kind of base our vacations around the banking/mortgage industry since that's who we do business with. So if they are shut down we might as well be. He's giving me Mon. off but he wanted me to take the following Fri. off (30th). He's done ish like this in the past and am kind of looking for something b/m companies use for vacations that I can use if this arises again.

Well, here's what the Federal Reserve bank uses (and I imagine most other major banks follow suit): Quote:
*For holidays falling on Saturday, Federal Reserve Banks and branches will be open the preceding Friday.
For holidays falling on Sunday, all Federal Reserve offices will be closed the following Monday.
So, it appears if it's a Saturday you don't get Friday off, but if its' Sunday you do get Monday off.

We get days off based on what bowl game we're in. Since we play on Jan 2 this year we get the 3rd off too for travel. Does that help?

Winter shutdown at the firm. No work from Dec 26-30 with Holidays being the 26th and 30th. We were also given the 2nd of January off as well with a paid holiday.

Last year, the company where I was working didn't give us any time off for Christmas since it fell on a Saturday. We were supposed to be there for all of Christmas Eve, even though the co-owners of the company had mysteriously vanished on the 23rd (and didn't show up again until well after New Year's ). It would be understandable if it was a retail job, but us programmers didn't have any compelling need to be there. Around noon our boss said "This is BS, we're going home." I don't believe that a private business owes their employees any time off at all. And if the owners want to take 2 weeks off for the holidays while stressing the importance of everyone being at work except on Christmas Day and New Year's Day, that's their right. But they aren't going to end up with very happy employees, and the ones with enough skill/motivation to find a better place to work will exercise their right to do so. Another cute little trick that company pulled.. They'd give managers their own company car. Sounds great, huh? Well they'd take the cost of the car out of the person's pay, so the employee was basically paying for the car, while the company got to pay him less AND claim the tax writeoff for the car. I'm glad I got the hell out of there.
