What a joke. Actually, I am a very centrist gun owner that believes in freedom of religion, but supremacy of none. I believe that trees need to be cut down to keep our economy going. However, the industry does need to be regulated to make sure they replant and do not over use those lands. I believe that we do need to reduce our dependence on fossil fuels, and I support more use of nuclear fuels for electrical production.
However, until a car is made that is moderatley priced and in the same size range as my Contour with decent power, I am not interested in buying a hybrid.
I despise what Republicans and Democrats do to this country in the name of political expediency. However, political upstarts like that wacko Nader are NOT the answer.
Drugs should be legal, too. But I do not and would not use them.
Oh, and way to show some class by tossing homosexuality in there. Nice way to show what a closeted small minded person you are.

Beowulf, I think it's safe to say that I agree with everything you've said in this thread so far. Nothing rubs me the wrong way about our current state of government so much as the Patriot Act. I dissent on only one point: I won't go so far as to say I hate anyone personally because of their beliefs, but people who feel certain ways about certain things disgust me.
I think that under Bush's administration, our current state of government is less "American" than it ever has been. The Republicans are supposed to be proponents of smaller government, and that is one of a few topics on which I absolutely agree with them. Whatever happened to that idea? Instead of lessening governmental power, the government now has the power to spy on the actions of every private citizen, and they call it the war against terrorism. I say bullsh*t. Our right to privacy may not be implicitly stated in the Bill of Rights, but it's implied. Also, Roe v. Wade established a huge precendent in regards to citizens' right to privacy, and I have to say I strongly agree with that (even though I am anti-abortion). This country is headed in entirely the wrong direction.

As Kremit pointed out, your defense budget is almost nothing. You lived under OUR nuclear umbrella during the Cold War. Your defense budget can be nil because of us. As for the "spying". The NYT made it sound as if Bush secretly ordered the random spying of every single American. In reality, we were only monitoring inbound calls to people with known ties to al Qaeda. Several members of the House knew about it, as did Senator Jay Rockefeller, ranking Democrat on the Senate Intelligence Commitee. And as we've now found out, they chose to publish this now because the author has a book coming out in a few months with more information on this. So yes, the left wing media machine is dictating the news cycle in order to sell books once again.
Bush should be applauded for his anti-terrorism measures.
