Beowulf, I think it's safe to say that I agree with everything you've said in this thread so far. Nothing rubs me the wrong way about our current state of government so much as the Patriot Act. I dissent on only one point: I won't go so far as to say I hate anyone personally because of their beliefs, but people who feel certain ways about certain things disgust me.
I think that under Bush's administration, our current state of government is less "American" than it ever has been. The Republicans are supposed to be proponents of smaller government, and that is one of a few topics on which I absolutely agree with them. Whatever happened to that idea? Instead of lessening governmental power, the government now has the power to spy on the actions of every private citizen, and they call it the war against terrorism. I say bullsh*t. Our right to privacy may not be implicitly stated in the Bill of Rights, but it's implied. Also, Roe v. Wade established a huge precendent in regards to citizens' right to privacy, and I have to say I strongly agree with that (even though I am anti-abortion). This country is headed in entirely the wrong direction.
