The only repairs he has had to do is a coil pack. Everything else was regular schedualded maitenence; spark plugs, wires, oil changes, filters and so on. Its a great little car, The ATX shifts wounderfully, it doesnt feel like a shitbox ATX that most car manufactors throw in any old I4 these days. it rides wounderfully and is very confertable to drive. Ive seriously thought about getting a 2001 or newer Elantra, just from what I have seen and heard from this car... But I just love my contour too much to give it up just yet. 
True I have driven an Elantra and they do shift nicely. Not that I would run out and get one. But they have been improving big time. Look at the tiburon, it has made quit a leap in the last few years.
