They are very nice cars, but high maintainence. I know a Jag mechanic very well and he says the same. Very expensive to fix too. Also my neighbor has one and she has trouble getting it started. How long do you planning to have the car? Just trying to help you out.

are you sure your mechanic friend was referring to the Xtype? or even a new Jaguar? these are not the Jaguars of old. those were the true British Jaguars which, like all British cars, were well known for being at the shop more than on the road. todays Jags are Fords. read some reviews on them and you will see that a few models are actually very reliable. i can believe the part about being expensive to fix...BUT...you dont HAVE to take it to a Jag mechanic because its really just a FORD. the contiques/mondeos are pretty reliable cars. i wouldnt be suprised if a number of the parts are interchangeble, so if something were to break, you might get lucky and not have to buy the "Jaguar version" cuz you know the same parts will be marked up a lot more if theyre "for the Jaguar" simply because they can be.

insurance might a bit more than for a csvt, but i cant imagine its tooo much more.

i actually considered (last year) selling my tour and buying an Xtype 3.0 manual. after test driving it i wasnt all that impressed (it did look georgious) and i was aiming to get one for around $20k out the door while selling my csvt for $10k. i thought to myself, for an additional TEN THOUSAND dollars?!?! AND i have to buy new rims cuz mine wont fit! AND springs...etc.. um, i think ill keep my sweet arse csvt thanks. and now i have a 3L anyways.

wow, sorry to stir this pot. i test drove 3 different X's, and each one had different problems....all under 45k miles, mind you.

terrible road vibration in one...turned out to be a bent half-shaft. (21000 miles)

"gear box malfunction" in another, as it kept flashing on the dash. (3.0 auto, 45000 miles)

brake pedal to the floor (all of them had spongy brake pedals, and pumping them helped) but the one was SCARY. (32000 miles)

so, i bagged the x-type and bought a 2005 Mazda6 3.0 5spd. it was so much sportier, had so much room, more zip, everyting....plus it has a factory warranty.

crap. i was really hoping to stay with the mondeo platform in some way. at least i was able to stay with a ford product and a duratec.

..okay..bent halfshaft says nothing of build quality,it says the driver prob. put it in a ditch,or was in a accident..

It's a shame the Jags had issues. The brakes might be soft by design, but not that soft The Mazda6 is sweet, closest machine to an SVT or old-school SHO. Enjoy driving that .

well, of course i know a half-shaft isn't a quality control problem. the point was...it's hard to find one in great shape, regardless of milage.

was this because:
they are fragile?
prone to abuse?
i picked, against the odds, 3 bad examples?

i live in st.louis. not only could i not find a manual trans countour/mystique, i couldn't even find a 6cyl with less than 100k miles on the clock! that drove me to the much, much more expensive x, because i love the body style. lo and behold, of those, i couldn't find one that was mechanically sound.

geez, it shouldn't be that hard!

My dad has a 2.5 sport awd and he loves his.
The only problems he had was the abs sensor went on both rear drive shafts and he had to have the complete shafts replaced at a cost of $1400 . It had only dome 40,000 miles too.
