Bought an Alpine CDA 9847 earlier in the year and really like it...until it turned cold. If overnight temps are in the 30's or lower be prepared for non-functioning controls and perhaps other wacky occurances too. In talks with Crutchfield it sounds like Alpine is aware of the problem and might have already done something about it and that it is only effecting the 9847 model. I was advised they can send me a new HU but can't guarantee it won't suffer the same problem though. So I'll just take the faceplate indoors at night and go from there. (Daytime temps in AL are rarely in the 30's so it isn't a problem to leave it in during the day--once the car has warmed it isn't an issue anyway.)
[Placed for the betterment of CEG on the off chance someone actually does a search on Alpine CDA 9847 and cold.]

It's that cold in Alabama ? That might explain why the single digits are here in NY state..The LCD might get "slow" it used to happen to my old watch.

Just installed one a couple weeks ago, I'll post if I see any problems. It actually will get below freezing in San Diego!

That's really odd .. I had the 9807 in my Contour and it worked beautifully in any weather or temperatures. The 9847 isn't that different of a model ..

I have the cde-9843 and I get error codes sometimes when playing MP3 discs. Even though it gets plenty cold in Boston, I don't think the error message has to do with the temperature, probably has to do with the discs themselves.
Other than that, I love the Alpine - it is the clearest and best sounding car stereo I've ever had or heard. And I love the way it looks - clean and streamlined. I just wish I had bought one with an auxilary input.
(I have a simple system - the Alpine 9843 paired with the 3 way Pioneer speakers up front and the 2 way Pioneers in back.)

An update to this saga:
The 9847 still has problems in the cold and Crutchfield is ready to take it back for repair under warranty. Here's the rub, it could take a month(!). So do I go through the hassle of no radio for a month? Or do I put up with the cold-weather niggles and hope the problems don't spread?

No problems so far with my 9847. It was high 30's over night and I leave for work at 5 a.m.
