1080 = scanlines

1080i = 1080 interlaced

interlaced = displays alternates between drawing the even-numbered lines and the odd-numbered lines of each frame.

1080p = 1080 progressive

progressive = storing or transmitting moving images in which the lines of each frame are drawn in sequence.

with interlaced every other line is the previous frame, where with progressive every line is the same frame.

Why would they do that? it seems it would be just as easy to make it progressive.

Interlaced video was created because it takes less frames to get a smooth-looking moving image, therefore it reduced transmission bandwith. That was very important back in the day. You can only send so much information through the air or through a copper cable.

Nowadays with fiber-optics and ultra-fast DVD players the size of images and the necessary bandwith needed is of less importance.

I believe that Interlaced video stuck around even after the advent of HDTV simply because interlaced is just how we've done TV footage for over 50 years and it was easier to stick with that format and let the TV itself convert it to a progressive image if so desired (although this isn't as good as a signal itself that is progressive).

Vidikron is just another HDTV. I want to know who is producing video in 1080p other than a PC. Is the XBOX360?
