there is an interesting article at teamxbox.

Sony is claiming that the only "true" HD is 1080p, and that all other forms are simply not "true" hi-def.

what does this community think?

And yet Sony doesn't even offer a 1080p monitor ( LCD{direct or projection}, LCoS, or CRT ). So, how do they even know?

This is just marketing spin. There's no 'true' format of HDTV, just levels of format which are defined by the ATSC.

How many stations do in fact offer HD programing? How many Cable/Satellite companies transmit an HD signal? Is it worth the extra money to lay out for an HD TV? I think not. I remember back in the 80's when stereo was the big break through and everybody was buying stereo TV's. Guess what not every station broadcasts in stereo even today.

Not to mention non-HDTV sets will work just fine with a converter.

After getting an HDTV, watching non HD programming sucks.

As far as semantics, I thought that anything over 720p was considered HDTV, with 480p being EDTV. Pretty much all HD programming on TV is in 1080i

When I purchased my HDTV a couple of years back, my understanding was that 720P and 1080P are true HD. See below.

SDTV480I
720x480
15.75KHz
30Hz
Interlaced

SDTV480P
720x480
31.5KHz
60Hz
Progressive

HDTV1080I
1920x1080
33.75KHz
30Hz
Interlaced

HDTV720P
1280x720
45KHz
60Hz
Progressive

HDTV1080P
1920x1080
67.5KHz
60Hz
Progressive

Keep in mind that many local stations will claim to be broadcasting in HD when they're resolution is really much lower than what is defined as HD.

Sony's SXRD is an LCOS TV that is 1080p. I saw it at a vendor show in Orlando running a 1080p feed. It looks amazing. They also had the Xbox 360 hooked up to it and Madden looked as close to a live game as I have ever seen. JVC also had a 1080p LCOS in Orlando that was actually a bit sharper than Sony's was.

The SRXD's have a native format of 1920x1080, but that doesn't equate to 1080p. Even the Owner's Manual only shows 1080i. Believe me, I would've already bought this TV if it did 1080p.
