What's the highest mileage anyone has seen/know of on a zetec? I figure mine can get at least another 100K.

Ztecherman, with good care it should go a loooong time. But being that it is the 4 cyl., I would recommend getting a "Timing Belt Component Kit" soon. My wife's '96 'Tour with the Zetec and 165K just crapped the head last week. The belt didn't break but the plastic gear for the idler shattered and then of course being the Ford Zero Tolerance Head most of the valves bent. Cost to rebuild head $1175. Cost for TBCK, $151 at NAPA. Kit has new timing belt, 2 small pulleys and of course a new plastic idler gear. But in my wife's case the shop working on it found a motor at a salvage yard for $400. So, for $1000 she gets a motor installed, with 101K, and the new TBCK will be put on it. Plus all previous charges (towing and work on old motor, etc.), and present labor. But, she decided she will get a new Taurus and get rid of the old "Tour.
Later. Pepse.

REMEMBER: Always fasten your seatbelt as it makes it harder for the aliens to suck you out of your car.

WRONG!
The Zetec is a non-interference motor. Valve damage can occur, but usually doesn't unless the engine is fairly worn or the failure happens at high rpm.
You got rooked by your mechanic on the pricey install - find a new mechanic. Another reason to find a new mechanic, a NEW cylinder head from Ford lists for under $800 & fordpartsonline.com price is $590.45.
Ztecherman, in Pepse defense, if you've got 100k on the engine, a new timing kit is a GREAT idea. Plan it, & do it.
Must be that jumbly-wumbly thing happening again.
