EDIT: I guess this is just me being nitpickey, but I was under the impression that the only 'Cudas were 1970-74. All previous models (in essence, the pre-muscle car version of the Barracuda) were referred to as the Barracuda. Correct me if I'm wrong here.
The "Cuda" moniker came out in 1969. Before that it was the "Formula-S" name that designated the souped up version of the Barracuda. For 1968 the available engines in the Formula-S were the 340 and 383 (maybe 440 as well). Same for 1969 but with the name change. My year ('67) the engine choice was 273 or 383. The big blocks didn't put out the same power as they did in the bigger cars because there wasn't much room for exhaust manifolds in their small A bodies so they were very squished. That made the 340 an almost no brainer because they were lighter and had nearly as much rated power. Karl
