Frosty morning in SE VA... started her up and let her run with front and rear defrost going while I scraped the frost off the windows... ran fine. Got in, ran a swipe of the windshield wipers; put her in Drive - DEAD. Turned off the key, turned off the headlights, turned off the rear defrost; cranked her - cranks like a champ - but no fire; nothing. Looked at fuel pump fuse; looked at ignition fuse - they look fine. Let her rest; still nothin'; tried cranking with accelerator slightly depressed; still nothin' HELP!!!!

Have you pulled a coil wire to see if it's making juice? What about fuel pressure? When you crank it does the check engine light come on and then go off after a short time cranking? If the CE light does not come on the EEC is not working. If it comes on and stays on the whole time when cranking one of the pick-ups is not (crankshaft, etc.)working.

Here is the outcome... It was behaving EXACTLY like it had when it had once run out of gas... guage said I had just under a quarter tank, but for fun, I popped the cap and threw in a gallon from my garage... I cranked her and she BRIEFLY surged like she wanted to fire, but went back to the same lifeless crank. Given the encouragement of the small surge, I went back and popped off the gas cap and resumed cranking... fired right up!!! I don't know what that means, but she's run fine all day - just a little spark knock at 2.5k-3k rpm or so.

Do you run your car with the gas cap loose? When you get too much air in the tank, you can loose fuel pressure. Tony2005 makes a good point about the fuel filter. They are cheap.

Most times the CEL will come on for this.

No you won't. The tank is not pressurized to feed the fuel to the engine.
Running with the cap loose or off will cause a CEL on any 96-on vehicles. It might take several drive cycles (EVAP system monitor has to run) for it to occur, but it will happen.
Time for a fuel pressure guage test to see if the pump is failing to provide adequate supply

I'll try the fuel filter, but where is the fuel pump if it needs to be replaced? Thanks to all.

In the gas tank. Access from the rear seat bottom cushion.

Wow suprised no one mentioned this... check out your cam sensor and crank sensor. They are located on the drive belt side at the end of the front side cylinder head. Cam is up top pretty easy to see and the crank sensor is down below just to the right of the damper. If these go bad it will do the same thing gauranteed. Typically these sensors should be replaced every 60k miles.
