If I lived in an apartment or a condo, then I'd care. But mine's open. I have relatives living on one side who probably couldn't figure out how to turn a computer on. And any other neighbors who could possibly pick up the signal can use it if they'd like. I only got the wireless for the very few times I use my laptop in the house. If someone is driving around and "finds" my spot, woopty doo. They'll have bigger problems if I find them camping out front.

i have mine open at my house (i really don't care if someone is using it. in fact, i KNOW of a couple people that do). i have more than enough bandwidth for my DLing needs and the people that are using it (two of my neighbors) are older people that use it for surfing and checking email. i'm not about to make then use some of their SS check so they can keep in touch with family.

on the flip side, i use someone else's wireless at work. we have an iDSL line (128K yuck) and they have a regular DSL (756K). it is open so i use it. i can't stand slow browsing.

This is interesting to say the least. I wonder if you left the keys to your SVT in the car and someone took it for a test drive if you would feel the same about lack of security.

When I got my wireless network. I thought I was longed into mine. Then I realized it was my neighbors. After that I adjusted my connection and blocked mine and I told them that theres was not blocked.

I wish...what if they had all the pay channels?!?!?

I've done it before...however all the connections around me are pretty weak from where I am and I don't have a lap top so...

But I got my router on lockdown

I don't secure mine either.. I used to... but I honestly don't feel like plugging in security codes when people come over.

If I "noticed" someone raping my network I would probably care... but I haven't... so I don't.

If you set it up correctly you never have to punch in any codes. You can set you PC to be recgonized by the network. If you pc doesnt get recgonized it wont be allowed on the network.

i find it interesting how people can try to validate what they know full well is theft.

i'm not saying i'm an angel and have never done anything wrong... but i would never defend myself with the lame ass excuses some of you are using. just because it's easy, and people aren't securing their network properly doesn't make it right.

There's legality then there's practicality.

You can bet that if someone has an open AP running that they probably don't have a chance in hell of catching you at your game. Now if you go using their printer then that's a different story altogether.

Personally I use WEP 128, as I can't use WPA in briding mode, but have certificate server running.
I believe that there is only one real good way to be secure, and it's the old trusted VPN ... SecurID! Other than that, security compromise is possibly, but the chance of somebody taking the time to break even a basic password are very low. It's just so much easier to move along to the next beacon which is unsecured.
