All others should take their cars to the professionals on the days when they are working in the shop. Painting a vehicle is an art form that takes a lot of talent, equipment, time, and materials that will far out-shadow taking it to the right person in the first place. Without the talent, the right equipment is useless.
If you really want to learn how to do it, take an auto body course at a local certified community college. That way you can get a grade for painting your own car, as well as get a discount on all of your supplies through the school.
