Well I just ordered my 56" JVC widescreen from best buy.
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp;jsessionid=4ETKDZWDH2RV1KC4D3JVAGI?skuId=7276985&type=product&productCategoryId=cat03006&id=1118839101223 (at the store) they didn't have it in stock and I wanted to make use of the no interest til 2008 deal. My question is this. I have never bought the extended warranty on anything because its usually a waste of money. But I know that these HD-LCD tv's have the projection bulbs that go out every now and then and they can be fairly expensive..
So.. Does anybody have a LCD TV that can tell me how often these bulbs go out? Is it worth getting the warranty?

The TV you've just purchased is not an LCD. It is projector based. On something like this, I think I would go with the Extended Service Plan. You never know what could happen and if it does it will be be $$$$.

A friend has a 44" Zenith LCD projection TV he bought from Best Buy a little over two years ago (August 2004). The bulb hasn't gone, but he's had a host of problems with it otherwise. There were a few light spots he noticed last summer, so he called up BB and they sent a moron out to fix it. This 'tech' fixed two of the three light spots, created another, and somehow misaligned the picture (it's not just one way all the time, it's slanted one way when using one input, slanted another way when using a different input, etc.). Same moron came back a few more times and keeps saying he needs to order more parts. It's always a 4-6 week interval between the time my friend calls up BB and the time this guy shows up, and my friend is sorely wishing he could just ship the TV to Zenith and have them fix it.

TV works great if not for this guy 'fixing' it and creating more problems as he goes along. I do recommend having the warranty for it though, they are certainly not as reliable as good old 27" CRTs.

My 2c.

the "best" (so i've heard) projection based tv's are the DLP sets because when you have to replace the bulb, it automatically aligns the picture. so you dont have to pay for someone to do that.

Honestly, any Hi-Def/widescreen/bigscreen in my opinion is not quite up to it yet. there has yet to be a perfect bigscreen format. so i'm going to hold off untill then.

Problems:
LCD: Dead/Broken Pixels & Contrast range
Projection: Bulb replacement & alignment (non DLP)
Plasma: not 100% sure on the exact problem, but i dont believe they last very well... i think the gas "wears out" or soemthing...

Yes this TV I am getting automatically alligns the bulb. you simply pull it out and replace it from a side access hatch. But the bulbs alone are around $200. And I'm thinking if I blow 2 of these over a 4 year span, the extended plan pays for itself. Just wondering what people have experienced.

I would never get a plasma. They are only good for about 4-5 years and then their brightness fades by something like 15-20% every year after that. And that is only if they are mounted perfectly level and straight. If they are not, then the life expectancy is even less.

I have had a projection TV for 4 years, no bulbs needed to date. DLP is the way to go, JVC's version D-ILA is similar. I personally would never pay for the extended warranty, but that is just me.

It's JVC's version of an LCD projection. Great set by the way. I would most likely buy the extended warranty. Most of them have some kind of yearly service/cleaning included (I know Sears' does). Make sure you have it paid off completely before that 0% financing runs out.

Have you read the article that JVC has on it's web-site about it? You did very good picking that one, sir. Very good indeed.

most people who dont buy warranties are usually morons, because when they dont and the item breaks they usually go back to the store and demands a new one. I had a warranty on my hitachi and it was worth the extra money. Nothing has broken on it except a small chip had to be changed to allow for progressive scan to run right. And the warranty from sears covered it. I have an old mitsubishi that is about 6 years old and have never had any problems with it. Ask around and most people will tell you that you cant go wrong with mitsubishi when it comes to reliability.

Yes I did, after the fact of buying it however . I have always been sold on JVC home electronics. Great quality and features on everything they build. My parents have had an extensive JVC home audio setup for the last 12 years which gets used at least 3hrs a day and they have never had a single problem. All my home theater electronics are JVC. My rear speakers and center are JBL northbridge While my sub and tower speakrs are custom setups that I built myself.
