as many of you probably know, i sell iPods. ive finally caved in and decided to keep one for myself. i have never used nor even listened to one before. i know, kinda funny. i dont even know how to work one

anywho, ive been doing some research on them. im torn between keeping a 20g photo and a 30g video. i just found out that the new 30g video doesnt even allow you to put your own videos in!! like short clips of my kid or internet funnies. the only videos you can put on there are episodes of LOST and itunes music videos
i also found out that the new ones lost the output jack on top (or whatever its called) so most of the accessories are no longer useful. the only saving grace, from what ive read, is that the new ones supposedly have much more clarity.

so im kinda at a draw. i like how the 4th gens have more accessories to utilize (like remote control) but i dont want to miss out on the clarity. i plan to put my entire cd collection on here to use in my cars. im hoping it will sound as good on my system as a cd/radio does. can anyone tell me if the 4th gens are perfectly fine clarity wise? i want it to (hopefully) have cd quality. am i asking too much of this little thing?

I have the origional ipod mini, with a bunch of cd rups on it plugged directly into my cars head unit. The quality is very very good. I am runing mbquarts in the front with an eclipse 5441 (5v preouts) into an old school orion colbat amp.... so the sound equipment is of good quality. I highly doubt you will notice any difference in sound quality (or sound clarity) between the two units.

I could be wrong but I think it's like a CD or DVD. If you're playing it through another piece of equipment the sound(or picture) is only going to be as good as that piece of equipment and it's speakers will allows.
You will lose some sound quality depending on the audio format(mp3, ogg orbis, WMA) and whether it requires compression or is a lossless format. I don't know what format iPODs use.

I was pretty sure you could put whatever video you want on the ipod as long as it was mp4 format. you can find mp4 convertors online, so any video could be played on it. I go to bladevids.com for my PSP movies, and they list movies for the ipod video too. Check that website out. They have whole sections for ipod movies to dowload onto it.

I can give you more details about it once my girlfriend opens up the 30gb video ipod I got her for christmas.

Persoanlly I think the iPod Video was a stupid idea... or a flop on Apple's part... Theoretically it SOUNDS cool, like.. "HEY! be able to take your videos and TV shows wherever you go... but... you have to pay for each TV episode you want to put on." Its really not worth it for the extra money, I would say stick with the iPod photo. I dont understand why apple made this innovative portable audio player into a "multimedia" player... Kind of ruins the concept of it. I think if anything they should have fixed that stupid battery problem before they came out with all of these new "ideas." If I ever get a new media player, im getting a zen micro.

It was basically in direct response to every Mac rumor site out there that has wanted video on the iPod since day one. Not that I care for the execution either, the result being something wider than average with a screen still too small to bother with. I currently own a 3rd gen and love it; when it kicks the bucket and I need to buy a new one my choice out of the current selection would end up being a used 4th gen. At least until the Nano begins having 30+ GB of storage.

i read on ipodlounge.com that the 4th gen supposedly has less "hissing" sound then the 3rd gen and supposedly it was eliminated in the new 5th gen(video). do you guys with 4th gens hear this sound? or is that just audiophiles being overly picky?

i dont plan to listen to an ipod with Bose headphones or anything, 99% of the time for bumping in the car. i just dont want it to sound like a cassette

Again, as long as you are running it into your car with a line in and not FM modulation, it will sound fine. I doubt highly you will be able to tell the difference between ipods based on sound. If the 'hissing' was THAT bad, there would have been more press about it and possibly a recall.
