boot normally.. but in to DOS mode, instead of Windows (where it would lock, normally)

Format your harddrive, using the parameter for the boot sector (bye bye virus, if you have it) THEN reboot.. insert CD and see if it loads.

the point is, the computer loads all those temp files onto the hard drive. If it's crashing, it's probably having a problem doing that. Either the cd is bad, or the drive is screwed.

pop the drive out and stick it in another computer, try a chkdsk or some sort of diagnostic software. If you had a spare drive lying around you could answer your problem in 2 minutes.

if it's giving him the error he posted originally

Quote:

windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
windows\system32\config\system

, he will not be able to boot into safe mode, command prompt, or anything else.

double edit: the drive you bought is most likely not new unless they opened it right in front of you. Nobody even sells 40gb's any more. Hell I pay $58 for 80GB's from my vendor and I could probably do better than that if I tried.

I would check your RAM...it may not seem like it would effect it, but my comp did the same thing...I couldnt figure it out for the life of me. I tried new resotre discs, new hardrive, and other windows booting things. I eventually took it to get servicd since i had some warranty time left and they fixed it. Supposeedly it was the RAM.

So how do I.... Uggh! I dont really have any other PC to pop this thing into. Plus if it is a virus wouldn't I risk spreading it?

the ram would cause the problem with freezing while trying to boot off the cd, but the original error he got was due to corrupt/missing files, and it not likely it was caused by bad memory.

Ok, ok, ok.... your not gonna believe this. Last night I just installed a 512mb stick of kingston I bought from best buy during their online turkey day specials. I hadent thought that that would cause this type of problem, and I never got any beep codes. But low n' behold I took it out and the PC booted right up like nothing ever happened. I just got a little message stating that the computer had recovered from a serious error. But I checked everything out, ran a few programs and it works just fine. I even checked the sys\config file and its right there in the windows folder.

Heh... guess Im going by best buy on my way home from work tomorrow.

If your wondering... It worked fine all last night after I installed the mem. Its the same size and speed as the existing ram, just a different brand.

Does Kingston ram not play well with others or something? Or is it just bad memory? Should I try to exchange it for a different brand? Ive never heard of the brand of mem thats in there now. I bought it cause it was cheap and it works. Its just got Azn characters on it. Nothing in english. Probably translates into "Happy Super Funtime Memory"

Maybe the memory wasn't seated right. Try another, like Crucial or Pny brand. Kingston is OK, well-established maker.
