However if you are looking for SPL only (loudness) then the smaller the box the better. I would personally go for the larger enclosure due to the higher "Q" but that brings up a whole nother topic i will not get into. The enclosure size reccomended by the mfg (infinity in this case) is to give you a min size requirement. As a side note if you do happen to buy another box I would stay away from ported enclosures due to the potential of unloading your subs and smelling that familiar smell of burned voice coil. Hopefully this will help you.

ugh....

a well designed ported box is plenty safe, and will be louder with the same sq as a sealed. also, you need to qualify some of your statements. all of this "bigger = sq, smaller = spl" crap is not absolute, not by a long shot. please don't spout off "info" without a full explination.

Every sub is different, you can not generalize small box = this and large box = that. IF you want to be specific get a box program like Bass Box and use the real T/S parameters of the woofer with something like a Woofer Tester from PE. Only then will you have designed the absolute right box for that driver.

The right tools make all the difference and they cost money. Till then, use what the manufactures recommend, they have these programs.....

As for taking up space with additional wood. It is done all the time to adjust for testing of subs. See how each reacts to changes.
