It could be caused by the clutch surface being pitted. I had an '87 RX-7 that did the same thing, it got so annoying that I replaced the clutch at 50,000 miles. Even though the clutch was nowhere near worn-out.
My Contour has 128,000 miles and the original clutch is still smooth as butter.

What engine is in it?

The bottom rear motor mnt, that controls torque, is liable to be toast.
