Do what i did. Have another key cut at like wal-mart. That way you can use that key to open the door if you ever lock the keys in the car. It wont start the car though.

There was somebody else who did this on CEG ... he kept the spare in his wallet for if "that time" ever occurred.

you don't have to have a "unprogrammed" key when you want to "program" a key. the keys are passive devices so they can not be changed, you program the pats module to accept the key

i know this because I had to switch out the ignition key because my lock cylinder jamed and would not turn to the start possition from run, I got a used lock set and I was able to "program" the key when the instructions say you need a "unprogrammed" key

but it still follows that 98s need one key to program and later then that needs 2

and i think it is also a good idea to have a spare key in a safe place incase you get locked out or loose your keys as you will at least be able to get into the car

hey how can you program a different key that's already cut for a diff. lock set, i have a spare lock and key set, but just don't know how to program the keys to work with the pats system.

I put the "new" lock cylinder in the car and used it to engaged the ignition so that I could run through the programing procedture. TO put a new lock cylinder in you need to remove the PATs reader so when i went to program the "new" key I held the reader and one of the old keys away from the streering column, as far as the wires would let me, did the same for the second original key then held the reader to the "new" key to "program" it

basically follow the pats programing how to on the main site, and just move the PATs reader and keys around as needed

The change came part way through the 98 model run. I remember that Ford didn't bother to tell anyone right away, and those of us in Ford dealerships at the time wondered why the cars that we had programmed to an additional key had them come back because the new key didn't work. I don't know the actual change date, but it was long before the 99 models arrived.

Can you tell us why dealerships choose to rape us on programming a key?

IT DOES NOT. i just had this problem. i bought my car with only one key. finally got around to picking up another set with a remote. the dealership told me that i would need to have it programmed by then for a 1 hour service charge. thats basically $90, just for the key and programming. they could not fit me in til the next week so i took the key home and gave it a shot. took 30 seconds to program the key. the 2 key requirement must be a dealer supported myth. i did have to have them program my remote, but they did that free of charge. dont waste your money. program the key yourself. it says how in your manual

YOU have a 98....as has been stated some 98's only need one key. Those of us with late 98's and on DO need 2 keys.
