you don't have to have a "unprogrammed" key when you want to "program" a key. the keys are passive devices so they can not be changed, you program the pats module to accept the key
i know this because I had to switch out the ignition key because my lock cylinder jamed and would not turn to the start possition from run, I got a used lock set and I was able to "program" the key when the instructions say you need a "unprogrammed" key
but it still follows that 98s need one key to program and later then that needs 2
and i think it is also a good idea to have a spare key in a safe place incase you get locked out or loose your keys as you will at least be able to get into the car
