You and I both know how suseptable 98+ cable shift cars are. If he has at least changed the fluid once it should be in ok shape. I would say with about 100% certainty that if you have high mileage and have never had an issue before it's time to pull the trans. He should be able to go down to the corner store and get some fresh ATF and but it in w/ very little cost. If it's still grinding, which it will be, it's time to pull the trans. Magic MT90 isn't going to fix squat. Now if you want to limp it for a couple months go right ahead, it's your car.
