let people around you know that you're quitting so they know the reasons why you're on edge.

seriously though, good luck to you.
I'll never know what it's like to quit smoking, but a lot of people seem to be doing it lately (and discussing it on the forums I frequent).

smoking nasty! i grew up around smokers. puts a reek on everything that never goes away.

Took two parents half a lifetime later to realize smoking was assisting in harming them. If my Dad didn't smoke whatever his old man had in those days, maybe stress wouldn't have caused the stroke he had and the cancer (we speculated) that mysteriously killed him in his recovery bed. He quit far too late. It served an equal assistance to the many other rigors of his life that ended up killing him.

My Mom quit after her heart was nearly collapsed. Forgive my attitude. I can't count how many people smoke in my family, or have, and my generation (brother and sister in law) seem to be the first who do not.

I am glad for your trying. Reading up on the science of quitting, it is literally a manipulation of thought patterns and decieving your brain on constant throughout the day. Those who win against their reward center of the brain are the strongest people I've ever known.

Good for you man. Cold turkey is the best way to do it. Willpower is the only important thing. You'll have cravings, and you just need to deal with them. I quit for 3 days once, but then i got so stressed out at work because of some rude customer and i broke down and bought another pack. I guess i'm just not ready to give it up yet.

Good luck! I've always been told that chewing gum helps. And think about the fact that if you start again, you'll have gotten nowhere, especially since it is worse for you to quit for a short while and then start again than to have not tried to stop at all.

First....CONGRATS on trying!!!!!! That is an awesome first step!! I smoked for almost 10 years (ranging in that time period between a half a pack a day up to 2 packs a day depending on whether it was the weekend or a holiday).

I haven't had on in a year and a half....believe me....there have been times I have wanted to have one SO BAD...I woulda given my big toe for one! But then I remembered what all I had been thru to get to where I am...

When I quit, I had recently moved...so new place...no "gucky" smoke smell anymore...washed all my stuff so I could start fresh...w/in a few days I noticed if I smelled someone after they had smoked it gagged me and I couldn't believe that I used to smell like that!! Then I noticed I could laugh w/out coughing! (Major deal for me!)...I have been sick 2 times since I quit...both minor deals...not like the 10+ times a year I would get bronchitis, cold, etc..when I smoked.

Keep straws around to hold and put in your mouth..helps...trust me! You can do this!!!!!!!!!!! Good luck!!!!

what about your sense of taste? Did everything taste better after you quit?
I've heard that food tastes so much better for a smoker who has quit.

night and day difference, it really is. I noticed after about two days my sense of smell was back. The thing that I noticed right away was the cigarette smell that was all over my bed room and clothes. just horrible.

Reformed smokers are the WORST!! (Wife is among them)

I stopped because it was making everything smell so bad. Cigar smoke does still smell good to me...
However, the cravings are gone. I just told myself, "Chicks think you smell. Fix it Jordan."

And that pulled me through. However I must admit, I don't become addicted very easily to things, so your case will probably differ from mine!
