Many have deluded themselves into believing that Volkswagen is a "premium" car brand like BMW or Mercedes and VW is laughing all the way to the bank. http://forums.vwvortex.com/zerothread?id=2302739&page=1

There aren't very many cars that I wouldn't want to own more than I don't want to own a VW. Actually, I'd like them, if they were built gooder.

96 ATX Zetec (i brake to watch you swerve)

I don't know... aside from the the coil pack and window regulator issues that affected a few model years, the Golf/Jetta hasn't been too bad, has it?
But I did drive a Phaeton once, and while it was sweet as hell, I couldn't see paying $60K for it. IMO if there's a company out there that least deserves its "premium" reputation and price right now it's Mercedes (although this does not apply to the AMG models).

I haven't known a single person who has owned a trouble free Jetta or VW product. Its really funny reading this linked thread because all of the people who support VWs are making excuses for them. They try to compare them to watches and appliances. Turbos failing before 50k!!! Hahah my buddy had to replace two sets of them on his own dollar on his S4! My wife's vw was such junk it was crazy. I couldn't believe a car could have such problems and be so new. The worst part about it was they could have easily been prevented. I remember the commercials... "The German Engineered Vw blah blah" VW has given German engineering a bad wrap. (Mercedes hasn't helped much either.) My buddies Jetta had so many problems he had to just park it in the garage and let his lease expire.

This, and this, along with more reviews for other model years, is why I haven't even looked for a Jetta. It would have been the perfect car for me in nearly every other respect.

vws are different in looks from the run-of-the-mill cars but does that make it a premium automobile that requires extra attention and money??

i agree 100% with this. but i still love my Jetta. even with all the problems and all the quirks, it has treated me well. kind of a love-hate situation
