so yea the rims I got say the tire size is 205/40/17
is there an alternative to that size or thats what I should stick with? thanks

No,
205/40R17 is just WRONG to start with. That's OK for a Honda, but to kreep the right rolling-radius for a Contour, in 17's you need a 225/45R17 tire.
I misswrote 40 in my first post, that would be OK for a 18.

225/45r17?...actually for his car,since it came with 205/55r16's...215/45r17's are fine....205/40' might actually be a smaller diameter then his 205/55r16's...which depending on the percentage(less than 2% is ok) might throw off some calibrations

I made the mistake of going 215/40/17. too thin and speedo is off by about 3mph.
