Cha-ching!! There's an answer that I can live with!

Where the hell've ya been lately anyway? We could use you expertise and your 'calm, cool, Clint Eastwood demeano' lol

BTW, what is your opinion after reading all this stuff??

Been busy at work....and buying x-mas presents! A personal project is also taking up time for the next few months.

Back to business...
The seats which were replaced not being cut deep enough seems plausible. Especially combined with decking the head and block. A thicker aftermarket gasket can help here. That helps put the cam timing back to the design location and improves the valve to piston clearance.

However, don't cut the seats too deep. You reduce the spring load and increase the risk of valve float.

My only quandry is that SVT98.5 that there was 0.050in variance on exhaust and 0.030in on intake. Ok variance is a good number to look at, but what were the measurments? Which are the deep ones and which are shallow? Seat depth measurements are normally taken with very specialized gages (it's held to about ± 0.006in at the plant). I'm guessing that the shop measured off the bowl of a valve. That can work ok for comparison purposes. But you need to measure before and after. That way you can try to put the depth back to the design height.

That info I don't have. The most shallow (closest to the deck) were the ones that hit. He did not take measurements from the deck to the bowl of the valve yet. What he did was on the deepest ones, cut just enough to add the five angles. Then he set the rest to within about .003-.005" of each other.

Do you have any idea as to what depth they should be if measured to the bowl? Or what the minimum installed spring tension should be? These are ST220 springs over 01 3L valves if that helps in the depth measurement. Better yet, what's the installed height from the spring seat to the top of the valve stem? That's probably a better route to go provided the measurement from the keepers to the top of the stems measure close to each other.

I'm not sure if they have these "specialized gauges" but this is Dart Heads/Blocks so I'm guessing they would since that's all they do.

How do I go about finding thicker aftermarket gaskets if that need happens to be necessary? I was just using Ford 3L gaskets.

I'll put holes in him!!

You can probably run two gaskets for double thickness and they should seal well enough.

Can you really STACK gaskets???? Sounds like a risky procedure to me...

No kidding. Instigator has custom copper gaskets on his Cougar...
Link If it comes down to that ask him for his source.

I saw no mention of these copper gaskets.
