Hey all I am will be building a 3.0L over the winter and want some options/opinions. I am getting the basicaly a short block hybrid. svt heads no cams, no intake. What is going to be my best option here, it may also get new pistons, it is a 3.0L bored 20 over. I am looking for good power on premium fuel. what is my compression limit. what cams are better, I also may add boost to it but it will be a couple years. it is going in a 96 mystique with an atx. I will swap to mtx and I will also need a pcm and harness, what are my option on those. sorry for the million questions but I want to start bugeting this so I know what I need to do to hopefully have this done for SZ 06.

Hybrid = no boost.
SVT cams is what you'll want for the most power. What are you trying to achieve with different compressions? Might as well stick with stock compression pistons.
As for the PCM, I'm guessing you'll just need one out of another MTX V6 Contour.
Or get yourself some 3L heads & SVT cams and prepare yourself for future boost. What year is the block? I've got some 3L oval port heads that I don't want much for. Let me know if you're interested.

i started with an atx....and now got a mtx
definetaly worth it if you can get a donor car for cheap and can do the work yourself
if you cant do the work yourself forget it then! (or have me do the swap )

I suppose it depends on how much YOUR PERSONAL time is. I def feel that I could sell an ATX car and purchase an MTX car w/o any issues.

good point pete. the car in question I just got for 500 bucks because it had a blown engine, but the body was in excelelnt condition and I got the 3.0L. then this last sunday in the wind we had here a tree fell on the car, so now the body is not so good, it needs windshield, hood and the a-pillay is bent, I am not sure what it takes to fix that. so yeah I am def thinking about some difgferent possibilities now. the mystique I am driving now is not much better, you probably remember for spring zing. any way back to mark, I was wondering about just going with a high compression motor and not boosting later if it makes good power, I know you are probably one of the most powerful NA 3.0L's out there. Would there be any benefit from running higher compression. the car will not be a daily driver but I will do a lot of driveing when weather is nice. If I go with the 3.0L heads the compression will go down but futer mods would be more possible. I am on a budget and am basicaly looking for something with great power bit I dont want to spend 3K on a turbo, I would also like to try to stay away from nitrous as well but you seem to have good luck with yours. I am really just wieghing dofferent options right now so I dont change my mind half way through the projuect and end up costing myself money.

Actually, I'd consider my 3.0L to be somewhere in the middle of the pack. As for hybrids, it's doing a decent job, but isn't too impressive when you think about Tom's old Hybrid putting down 217whp on the stock catback. I'm currently at 206whp and 195wtq. You can definitely get more out of it if you plan to do any headwork and port matching. You might talk to Evan(Timeless420) about his high compression 3L, and what he thinks his 11.X:1CR pistons did for his motor. I believe he's putting out quite a bit of power actually. If you're going with the Hybrid for sure, and you want to put money into pistons, you might go a little higher CR. You'll definitely want/need a tune to get that untapped power out of it though!
Your best bet with that Hybrid would be to do ANY work on the heads now that you can, install SVT cams and 3L valves(if possible), MSDS headers(can be had for ~$300 coated!!), and build yourself a true dual setup. Get a nice big K&N & MAF adapter, 65mm T/B and use your stock MAF. Any port matching of the intake manifolds to heads should be done now also. After a tune, you'll be well over the 200 mark, or potentially in the 220+ range with the right amount of work. Good luck!

Actually it was 214 with catback, 217 catback dropped. Sorry it isn't clear, but I'm too honest to not correct that.
Funny, later model after FSVT rims, louvered resonator and reinstallation of stock SVT intake was 206 wHP. I was informed at that time that the louvered core resonator was very harmful to the exhaust flow and cost me some HP. I later pulled it and installed a larger diameter catalytic converter with full 2.5" exhaust and straight through mufflers.

Building a hybrod with no SVT cams is - to me - pointless. I would just drop in the entire 3L oval port, like I did for BK, and call it a day. This option will allow you to run boost if you ever decide to.

I'd just be interested in seeing a 2.5L with good head work and the escape cams I have sitting here. I'm willing to donate except for minimal shipping/packing costs so that someone will get to it. I'm beginning to think that well ported exhaust side but retaining the stock exhaust valves and using these cams will result in a HUGE midrange torque monster and get it prepared for boost.
THe ide I have is to take the 2.5L, machine out the combustion chamber where the shrouding is. Put in at least late model 2000+ pistons or nice aftermarket pistons. Port the hell out of the exhaust. Remove the secondaries and actually combine the runners. For added fun, slap a fatty turbo on it with a moderate trim that will spool a bit quicker, maybe more like the T25 but with a bigger compressor.
