i think GM needs to competely overhaul its US brands and then introduce those changes to other markets as appropriate:

1) Chevy (Opel abroad) - focus on Economy cars of all sizes to compete with Hyundai, Kia, etc...
2) Pontiac (Holden abroad) - the performance wing. they are already on their way here, but need to take it one step further.
3) Cadillac - luxury. they almost have a complete line-up here. and dump the oversized SUVs!
4) GMC - the truck company. direct competitor to Ford and Dodge. gas guzzlers unite!
5) Hummer - the Jeep competitor. off-road focus. extreme vehicles only.
6) Corvette - the only new brand. sport cars to exotics served here. a chance to offer true performance worldwide without the stigma that the Chevy badge gives the brand. 2 or 3 lines with tons of powerplant options, body styles, and aftermarket support.

Saab - sell it back to the Trolls
Oldsmobile - dump it!
Buick - dump it!
Saturn - dump it!
Subaru - already gone!

this trimmed down strategy will limit the cross-branding mess that has consumers confused about GM these days. offer dedicated brands with a dedicated purpose.
