I think it's a combination of the alternator and what kind of belt that you are running.
I've got an alternator overdrive pulley and a Dayco Polycog belt. For the winter, I put my stock crank pulley back on. Now the alternator screams. I'm guessing it hits 15k RPMS or more.

BTW, the Gatorback that I had on seemed to be a bit louder.
