IIRC it was theorised that this is actually from the gears in the Tranny. Not %100 certian but I'm pretty sure that was it. By that logic it is a problem for MTX's only. I have it too. Granted it is not as bad as it used to be and now that I have a ribbed aftermarket flex pipe I have a new more pronounced whistle to contend with. It is much more audible then the other one.

I don't think that's right mbb. Seeing as everyone who has responded to this thread has it, and the majority are ATXs. It isn't a problem so to say, just a quirk. The Zetec, ATX or MTX, is a noisy engine, plain and simple. I'm lovin it.
The Real Question is: How does Jordan make his Mercury even louder and nastier than before? Which belt is the loudest guys? I think I have the Goodyear Gatorback belt. I know it's a Goodyear tho. Any others louder than that one?

You know, that seems to be a recurring trend...
Everyone I know was given a 4-cylinder Zetec by their mother. Even me. Strange huh?

Well, mine was given to me as a first car, by my mother and my father.

Technically, my mother claims that she just lets me 'use' her car, but she hasn't driven it in like two years since she got the Durango...

I believe the wheeshing noise at high revs is from the air rushing through the intake system. Probably through the throttle body, around the butterfly valve where it is most restricted. Let's call it an "aero-acoustic phenomenon."
