DirecTV's is above TX and i can't get a reception at that angle with the woods i have behind my house. if DN's is pointed in a different direction, i may be able to go that route.

Image 4 illustrates the different satellite locations used by DirecTV and Dish Network. In this case the customer was not sold a DirecTV system because the trees on the left would block the signal from DirecTV. This customer will never have a problem receiving Dish Network.[/quote

that might as well have been written in Ancient Greek.

for what it's worth, my installer tried everything, including a roof mount with tripod at no extra charge. in the end i cancelled and got all my money back. i loved DirecTV. their customer service was fantastic, but they need a satellite over Quebec in order for me to get a signal.

<----Another DirecTV fan. Had them since 1998 and love the picture quality, channel selection, music (which is now XM!), and the customer service is top drawer. Sadly, since moving I've been trapped in Comcast's world and it blows in comparison. Still have DTV at the farm though and I'll have the service turned on whenever I visit; would the cable company embrace such a on/off policy???? Pfft!

Of more relvance to this thread....my DTV box is never connected to a phone line.

Why not use Bell-VU (sp?)

over Washington? that faces even thicker trees on my property and doesn't service Boston. the TX orbit services the eastern seaboard.

Wow, 2 months later. It took me this long to decide I guess. And get off my lazy butt and call.

Well, I called DirecTV to ask the million dollar question today. They say I can add service w/out a land line, but cannot get a DVR, my purpose for switching.

So then I call Dish network and they say for a $5 monthly fee I can have anything I want without a land line! Woo Hoo!

They come to install for free on Saturday!

Just thought I'd answer the age old question for anyone else wondering.

You can definintely have a DVR with DirecTV without a landline, you just need to hook it up one time to a landline somewhere for inital setup. That's what I did since my house didn't have a landline for 6 months when I first moved in due to a lack of lines in my new neighborhood. I still only hook it to a landline once every couple months and even then it's not necessary, it just stops nag messages about not being able to call in for xx days. So, if you prefer the DTV packages over Dish it's not a problem with no landline.

No DVR?! Who is your provider?

Comcast has DVR, and I absolutly love it! (Now that it works, aside from a post I made to complain how it didnt)

The boxes are modern too, but sometimes a model younger works better. (Ex: Comcast Motorola DCT3412 I still has bugs since its new, the older DCT6412 I/II/III work better)

My provider is Cebridge, they are based out of Texas somewhere. I am in a smaller town outside of the KC Metro area so they are a bit behind the times. Comcast is in my old town of Olathe, which is only 12-15 miles South, but have everything including a 5 mb internet connection. I am stuck with 1 mb.

We don['t plan on getting a land line anytime soon. So even connecting it occasionaly isn't an option. In my eyes, the 2 were pretty much equal anyway and now I get Sirius (which is waht I have in my car) on my TV too insted of XM.
