For the year I had direcTV the only time we lost signal was when the snow was so deep it completely covered the dish.

In the 7 or so years my parents have had it, I would say it goes out maybe 15 minutes a year, from what I have seen.

I've had both (Direct and Dish) and from MY standpoints.. DirecTV is much better.

I can't mention why I would prefer DirecTV, but I'll say this: the hack job that installed it sucked! DirecTV had to walk me through it on the phone. Anyway, they offer more music channels, and the pricing (close either way you go) is wonderful.

Anyway.. for someone that likes the..things.. I like.. DirecTV is MUCH.. MUCH... MUCH easier to... use.

I figured all the "outages" was a cable ploy to get people to swith or stay with cable.

The place the people we bought the house from had their dish on is about 8-10 feet up on teh side of the house. If teh snow blocks that, I think there are more serious thinks to worry about than my TV reception!

I have DirecTV. My only gripe is the pricing on the HD Tivo unit is still pretty high (approx. $500), and there are no incentive programs that I know of for when you first sign up. However, if you were to go Tivo on one tv and an HD reciever on another, the cost seems to be much less. No real gripes about loss of service. Like was previously said, we don't lose it that much, and when we do, there is some serious weather overhead.
BTW, we're within 20 miles or so of each other, so what applies to me, most likely applies to you as well regarding weather.

HTH!

Oh. Another thing I remember. A co-worker has Dish DVR. His has 2 outputs and RF remotes, so you can run the DVR to 2 separate tv's and watch DVR programming off one unit. He seems to like it pretty good. Might look into that.

I like Comcast... If that is an option, personally paying a little extra for 100% Clear channels, watching in stormy weather, and my favorite... On Demand (HBO on demand for Sopranos...) Then Adult swim On Demand is nice, Then whatever is on. Comcast offers a DVR last i heard... Never required a phoneline with them since I've had it

I've had both. Had Dish, now DirecTV. DirecTV offers better/cheaper upgrades which is why I left Dish Network. I got DirecTivo initiall, and an additional Tivo unit a couple months ago (free after rebate!). Yes, you need a land line (not even VOIP) for the TIVO recording to work, but otherwise I have my phone line disconnected. I have even ordered PPV movies w/o a phone line and still get charged on my next bill.

Every channel is digital channels (unlike cable)
Dual tuner Tivo kicks arse!

Does anybody prefer one over the other for any particualr reason? DirectTV vs. Dish Network?

I may need to start looking at pricing and dropping my cable tv!

Check the packages & pricing. I picked DirectTV because of the package with channels I wanted with local channels & satellite music stations was cheaper.

I don't have the phone line thing hooked up either. All that does is allow you to purchase PPV channels using the remote & a few other personalization tasks. I prefer to have to pick up the phone & call for special programming.

As for the weather reliability, I just went through a hurricane - a big one - Wilma. Only time I lost picture was when the power went out. About 2 weeks after the storm DirectTV called ME to make sure my system was performing well. They even offered to come adjust the dish if my signal strength was not equal to the original install quality. I checked when power came back on & it was fine.

My boss has cable & is STILL waiting to get through to the cable company to have his cable fixed. Just like Frances & Jeanne last year, you couldn't even talk to a person at the cable company for two months. Nearly a year after the storms my cable was still not fixed (re-attached to my house) so I dumped them.

Satellite TV providers are hungry for customers & they compete for them. Cable has no competition over their lines so they don't give a [censored] about an individual customer.

For the record, I will NEVER go back to cable. I'll get rabbit ears before I spend another penny on a cable company. They are out-dated & out-classed.

Did you know there is a hack out for Dish Net. You can get it free if you just buy the equipment seperatly. This includes all the PPV, HBO's, and pROn you want.

Look here:

(Yes this is NAGRA2 I am talking about)

If you do go Dish Net, legit or otherwise. I suggest you get the 721 DVR. This is a dual tuner DVR with about 80 hours, you can upgrade with a little help. There is no monthly fee, and you can find them fairly cheap online.

do you know where DishNet's sat is located?

DirecTV's is above TX and i can't get a reception at that angle with the woods i have behind my house. if DN's is pointed in a different direction, i may be able to go that route.
