I've had both. Had Dish, now DirecTV. DirecTV offers better/cheaper upgrades which is why I left Dish Network. I got DirecTivo initiall, and an additional Tivo unit a couple months ago (free after rebate!). Yes, you need a land line (not even VOIP) for the TIVO recording to work, but otherwise I have my phone line disconnected. I have even ordered PPV movies w/o a phone line and still get charged on my next bill.
Every channel is digital channels (unlike cable)
Dual tuner Tivo kicks arse!
