The E0 guards are the best way to go. Then knauberized, then E1+. (IMHO)

Is there a safe way to check and see if there is clearcoat under there b/f going to far?

Try pealing a little bit off of one on the rear doors. You won't really now until you try it. Some '95 owners have done it with no problem. When I took mine off I used a credit card to help get the extra adhesive off.
